Hideyo Noguchi

Hideyo Noguchi (野口英世, otherwise known as Seisaku Noguchi) (1876 - 1928) was a U.S. (Japanese-born) bacteriologist. He isolated the syphilis spirochete. He was born in Fukushima prefecture, Japan. When he was very young, he burned his hand and his fingered became disabled. Later he recovered the dexterity thanks of surgeonry. It swawn him an interest for medicine in general. He studied medicine in Tokyo. Later he went to the USA. He married with an American woman. He died in Ghana due to yellow fever, when he was studying this disease itself. Noguchi's likeness will adorn the Japanese 1000 yen note starting in October, 2004.
