Hervanta

Hervanta is a big suburb of Tampere, Finland. It can also be considered as a satellite city of Tampere. Home to more than 26 000 people, Hervanta is famous for its blocks of flats. The total number of flats is about 11 000. 4 500 people are students, many of them studying in the Tampere University of Technology (TUT) or in the also local police academy, the only one in Finland. The most famous student housing complex is Mikontalo. Almost 8% of Hervanta inhabitants are foreigners of 75 nationalities. The current area of Hervanta is about 13.8 km2 and growing constantly. Hervanta was also chosen as the best suburb of Finland in a comparison made by the Helsingin Sanomat at August 17 2003.

Technology

Hervanta is somewhen said to be the Silicon Valley of Finland, because a lot of technology have focused to the area. In addition to the University, the Hermia science center and a VTT office complex are located there. The worlds first-ever GSM phone call was also made in Hervanta in 1991, when Radiolinja started building its GSM network. Nokia and many other companies have offices in Hervanta.
