Henry County, Virginia

Henry County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 57,930. Its county seat is Martinsville6.

History

The county was formed in 1777 from the western part of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. It was originally named Patrick Henry County, for Patrick Henry, who was then serving as the first Governor of Virginia after independence. In 1785 the northern part of Patrick Henry County was combined with part of Bedford County to form Franklin County. In 1790, Patrick Henry County was split into two counties, the western part becoming Patrick County and the rest becoming Henry County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 996 km² (384 mi²). 990 km² (382 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water.

The county is divided into six supervisor districts: Blackberry, Collinsville, Horsepasture, Iriswood, Reed Creek, and Ridgeway.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 57,930 people, 23,910 households, and 16,952 families residing in the county. The population density is 58/km² (152/mi²). There are 25,921 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (68/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 10.63% White, 89.47% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.39% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 3.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 23,910 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county, the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,816, and the median income for a family is $38,649. Males have a median income of $26,660 versus $20,766 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,110. 11.70% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.20% of those under the age of 18 and 12.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Towns

As an independent city since 1928, Martinsville is not part of Henry County, despite its status as the county seat.
