Hella, Iceland

Hella is a small town in the south of Iceland at the shores of the river Ytri-Rang. Hella is situated 94 km to the east of Reykjavk on the hringvegur (Road no.1) between Selfoss and Hvolsvllur. The name of the town comes from caves near the river. It is said that Irish monks were living there in the times of first settlement. The town has 580 inhabitants. There are small industries as well as shops. As in other regions of the country, tourism can be regarded as a growing sector. The famous volcano Hekla is not too far away and so it is possible to go hiking there as well as to make excursions to other tourist attractions like Landmannalaugar or rsmrk.
