Hawaii State Highway 61

Hawaii State Highway 61 is the main highway connecting downtown Honolulu with Windward O‘ahu, including Kailua and Kaneohe. It passes through the residential neighborhood of Nuuanu, and through the Nuuanu Pali Tunnels to the communities of Maunawili and Kailua. The current Pali Highway is actually the second Pali Highway to be built. The original Pali highway went along the same route and the actual road still exists, although it is closed to vehicles. When the current Pali Highway opened, the original Pali Highway was closed and converted into a recreational hike. The Old Pali Highway, as it is now called, is noted in Hawaii's popular culture for being a place with strong spiritual connections. Many "ghost stories" have settings along this old highway.
