Hattie Carraway

Hattie Carraway was the first woman to serve in the United States Senate. Consequently she attained several other firsts such as first woman to preside over the senate. Originally she was appointed to serve the unfilled term of her late husband in 1931, but she contested and won two subsequent terms mostly due to the help of Huey Long of Louisiana. In 1944 she was defeated by William Fullbright. Hattie Carraways record was largely typical of a New Deal Southern Democrat, and after her service in the Senate she served in various appointed posts in government. She is also known for never taking the floor in full senate debate. She thought that since the men enjoyed arguing so much she saw no reason to take time from them and spoil their fun.
