Hartford, Illinois

Hartford is a village located in Madison County, Illinois, near the mouth of the Missouri River. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,545. Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1803-1804 here, near what has been designated the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site. A small museum has replicas of the expedition's keelboat, as well as of the barracks the men slept in.

Geography

Hartford is located at 38°49'28" North, 90°5'33" West (38.824498, -90.092509). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.26% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,545 people, 650 households, and 434 families residing in the village. The population density is 153.0/km² (396.4/mi²). There are 710 housing units at an average density of 70.3/km² (182.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.45% White, 0.13% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 650 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.89. In the village the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males. The median income for a household in the village is $33,828, and the median income for a family is $40,652. Males have a median income of $31,694 versus $20,156 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,160. 13.0% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
