Hart Memorial Trophy

The Hart Memorial Trophy is presented annually to the most valuable ice hockey player in the National Hockey League during the regular season. Voting is conducted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Presentation of the trophy originated in 1923 when it was donated by Dr. David Hart to the National Hockey League. Dr. Hart was the father of Cecil Hart, a former coach and manager of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. Wayne Gretzky won the award a record 9 times in the 1980's.
