Harry StanleyHarry Stanley was born in Scotland in 1953 and unlawfully killed by Metropolitian police officers Inspector Neil Sharman and Pc Kevin Fagan in London,England in September 1999. A first inquest jury had been prevented by the coroner Dr Stephen Chan from considering verdicts of unlawful killing or gross negligence manslaughter. His widow Irene won a High Court battle to quash the open verdict recorded by the first inquest. Mr Justice Sieber ordered the fresh inquest after ruling that there had been an "insufficient inquiry". During the new hearing, coroner Dr Andrew Reid heard that the two Met police officers fired the shots after being given the wrong information in a tipoff. Mr Stanley, was carrying a table leg which had been repaired by his brother. The new jury returned a verdict, in November 2004, of unlawful killing, which resulted in the suspension of the officers involved. In protest at their suspension 200 armed officers returned their weapons, as they did not want to be held responsible for their actions.
