Harrison County, Texas

Harrison County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 62,110. Harrison county is located in East Texas and is named for Jonas Harrison, a lawyer and Texas revolutionary. Its county seat is Marshall6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,370 km² (915 mi²). 2,328 km² (899 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 62,110 people, 23,087 households, and 16,945 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (69/mi²). There are 26,271 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.35% White, 24.03% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.86% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 5.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 23,087 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.60% are non-families. 23.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.09. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $33,520, and the median income for a family is $41,112. Males have a median income of $32,451 versus $20,913 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,702. 16.70% of the population and 12.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.80% of those under the age of 18 and 14.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
