| Map of the Czech Republic highlighting Harrachov | Harrachov (in German Harrachsdorf, in Polish Harrachov) is a town situated in the northern Czech Republic, 4 km from border with Poland, on river Mumlava. It is within the Krkonose mountain range, in height cca 700 meters above sea level. History Harrachov was founded as a village Doerfel (ethnic-German) in the 17th century. In 1714, it was renamed Harrachov after owner of the area, count Harrach. Contemporary Harrachov (town since 1973) was established after 1945 by joining originally independent settlements Nov Svět and Rovitě together with Harrachov. In 1959 the hamlet Mtiny was joined where nowadays there is a railway terminal of the route Tanvald Harrachov. This area belonged to Poland and was exchanged for the same large area to the north from Mrtv vrch. Since the end of 19th century it was known for its glassworks production, textile industry and mining. Today Harrachov is one ot the the most important Czech centres of mountain hiking and skiing; several winter sport events take place in Harrachov regularly. The whole region is of increasing importance for alpine tourism in Central Europe. International road E-65 (from Prague to Poland) goes through the town.
