Hardeman County, Texas

Hardeman County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 4,724. Its county seat is Quanah6. Hardeman County is named for Bailey Hardeman and Thomas Jones Hardeman, two early Texas politicians and legislators.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,805 km² (697 mi²). 1,801 km² (695 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,724 people, 1,943 households, and 1,319 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 2,358 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.41% White, 4.83% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 7.09% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 14.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,943 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 29.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 22.60% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 20.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,312, and the median income for a family is $33,325. Males have a median income of $26,683 versus $18,566 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,824. 17.80% of the population and 14.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.00% of those under the age of 18 and 13.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
