Hansford County, Texas

Hansford County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 5,369. Its county seat is Spearman6. Hansford County is named for John M. Hansford, a Texas state congressman and judge, who was shot and killed by a mob.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,384 km² (920 mi²). 2,382 km² (920 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,369 people, 2,005 households, and 1,489 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 2,329 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.88% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.47% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 31.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,005 households out of which 36.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.00% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.14. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,438, and the median income for a family is $40,281. Males have a median income of $29,022 versus $17,668 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,408. 16.40% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.60% of those under the age of 18 and 15.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
