Hamlin, New York

Hamlin is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,355. The Town of Hamlin is in the northwest part of the county.

History

The Town of Hamlin was created as the Town of Union, but was renamed in 1861 as the Town of Hamlin in honor of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 115.3 km² (44.5 mi²). 112.4 km² (43.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.47% water. The northern boundary is Lake Ontario, and the eastern town line is the border of Orleans County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,355 people, 3,255 households, and 2,532 families residing in the town. The population density is 83.2/km² (215.5/mi²). There are 3,503 housing units at an average density of 31.2/km² (80.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.78% White, 1.09% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,255 households out of which 43.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.24. In the town the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,987, and the median income for a family is $55,020. Males have a median income of $39,722 versus $24,698 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,978. 6.0% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
