Gustavus Swift

Gustavus Swift was a Boston native who moved to Chicago in 1875, realized that refrigerated railway cars would make it possible to ship butchered meat, eliminating the need to transport live cattle. He invented the refrigerated car but could not sell it to the major railroads because they feared losing their substantial investment in cattle cars and pens. Swift had the cars built himself and convinced a Canadian railroad with only a small stake in cattle shipping to haul them to eastern markets. He established packing houses in Omaha and Kansas city, near the largest cattle markets; built refrigerated warehoused as key distribution points; and hired a sales force to convince eastern butchers of the quality of his product.
