Guru Kunchu Kurup

Guru Kunchu Kurup Guru Kunch Kurup (1880-1972) the master mind in creating fresh aesthetics of Kathakali acting/ dancing, by the sublime presentation of rasa and bhava abhinaya. He was known for his pacha and kathi roles. He is considered to be one of the best talents Kathkali ,Kerala ever produced. Guru Kunch Kurup was the first artist to get Indian national award for Kathakali.he was honoured later by padmasree and padmabhooshan awards. When Kalamandalam was founded Vallathol Narayana Menon invited him as the master trainer. Pacha and Kathi characters were Kunchu Kurup's speciality.The Hamsa( swan) and Kaattaala ( The barbarian)Kuchela and Brahman were is notable characters. Kunchu Kurup was born in Poypallilkulam family of Thakzhi, Kuttanad, Alappuzha. He is paternal uncle of the Malayalam novalist and Jnanpeet literary award winner Thakazhi Shivashankara Pillai.He had his initial training in Kathakali under the Kochappiramans of Kurichi, Kottayam. Then he learned under the Champakkulam Sanku Pillai.
