Gummersbach is a place in the district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located 56 km E of Cologne. It was designated formerly also than lime town, because lime trees lined the main street. Till the 20s of the 20th century the citizens called her town also small Paris.

History

In 1109 the place the first time was mentioned documentary namely in the lowering of the episcopal Kathedralsteuer for the church in Gummeresbach by Eb. Friedrich. Manner of writing of the first naming: Gummeresbracht. Gummersbach acquired in the year 1857 town right.

The coat of arms

The arms were granted on July 27, 1892. Gummersbach developed rapidly from a small village to a large city during the early 19th century, due to the metal and textile industry. The right part of the arms thus show a spindle as a symbol for the textile industry. The left part shows the arms of the Counts of the Mark, as the area belonged to the Mark since 1287.
