Grosse Pointe is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,670.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water (part of Lake St. Clair). The total area is 53.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,670 people, 2,388 households, and 1,559 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,046.0/km² (5,297.9/mi²). There are 2,504 housing units at an average density of 903.6/km² (2,339.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.18% White, 0.79% African American, 0.07% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,388 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.02. In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 29.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $81,111, and the median income for a family is $101,889. Males have a median income of $79,637 versus $44,167 for females. The per capita income for the city is $53,942. 2.5% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Grosse Pointe was the setting for the 1997 movie Grosse Pointe Blank starring John Cusack and Minnie Driver. There was also a Grosse Pointe television series. Running on the WB from September 2000 to February 2001, this comedy took a satirical look at the action behind the scenes of a teen prime-time soap. It starred Darren Star of Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City fame.
