Grossauheim

Grossauheim (13,369 inhabitants, without Wolfgang 11,669) is the biggest district of Hanau, on the north bank of the river Main. It has already been mentioned in 806 by the name "Ewichheim". It has been a farming village until the end of the 19th century but during the 20th century numerous industry branches settled there. The Hanau Port built in 1924 is mainly on Grossauheim's ground. In 1956 Grossauheim was appointed free town. In 1972 Grossauheim suburnised Wolfgang but due to the Hessian region reform Grossauheim and Wolfgang were incorporated into Hanau in 1974. In the seventies the industry began to migrate and it has almost vanished today. A well-known "Auheim Child" is the famous German sculptor August Gaul. In honour of St. Rochus the "Rochus Market" takes place every year in September in the town centre of Grossauheim. Grossauheim's twin town is the French town Conflans-Sainte-Honorine which is located near Paris at the river Seine.
