Grimes County, TexasGrimes County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 23,552. Its county seat is Anderson6. Grimes is named for Jesse Grimes, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and early settler of the future county. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,075 km² (801 mi²). 2,055 km² (794 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.94% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,552 people, 7,753 households, and 5,628 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (30/mi²). There are 9,490 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.79% White, 19.96% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.93% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 16.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,753 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 23.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.18. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 117.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 124.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,280, and the median income for a family is $38,008. Males have a median income of $30,138 versus $21,747 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,368. 16.60% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line.
