Greenstone, Ontario

Greenstone is an amalgamated town in the Canadian province of Ontario. As of 2001, the population was 5,662 people. Prior to amalgamation, the 1996 population was 6,530 (A population change of -13.3%). The area of the town was 2,780.56 square kilometres, which is larger than several countries, and is the largest incorporated town in Canada. The town was formed in a wave of community amalgamations under the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario in 2001, encompassing the communities of Nakina, Geraldton, Longlac, Beardmore, Caramat, MacDiarmid, and Orient Bay. The communities are all separated by many tens to hundreds of kilometres of untouched northern wilderness (Nakina, in fact, is entirely exclaved from the rest of the town), but the amalgamation links the municipal services and functions into a single entity. While the strategy was of debatable success for cheek-to-jowl urban communities of the highly populated south, the appropriateness for the remote, isolated northern communities is still contested by the residents. Greenstone's mayor is Michael Power.
