Greensboro, Alabama

Greensboro is a city located in Hale County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 2,731. The city is the county seat of Hale County.

Geography

Greensboro is located at 32°42'8" North, 87°35'46" West (32.702340, -87.596216). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.42% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,731 people, 1,026 households, and 688 families residing in the city. The population density is 443.0/km² (1,146.5/mi²). There are 1,142 housing units at an average density of 185.3/km² (479.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 38.30% White, 60.89% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,026 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.1% are married couples living together, 27.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.21. In the city the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $22,930, and the median income for a family is $28,990. Males have a median income of $36,071 versus $23,224 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,271. 35.3% of the population and 27.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 47.1% of those under the age of 18 and 26.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
