Green Sunfish
The green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) is a species of freshwater fish in the sunfish family (family Centrarchidae) of order Perciformes. It is native to a wide area of North America east of the Rocky Mountains, from the Hudson Bay basin in Canada to the Gulf Coast in the United States and northern Mexico. The green sunfish reaches a maximum recorded length of about 30 cm (12 in), with a maximum recorded weight of 960 g (2.1 lb). The species prefers vegetated areas in sluggish backwaters, lakes, and ponds. Its diet can include insects, zooplankton, and other small invertebrates. A panfish popular with anglers, the green sunfish is also kept as an aquarium fish by hobbyists. L. cyanellus has been transplanted to many countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe, in some of which it has become established. The specific epithet, cyanellus, derives from the Greek κυανός (blue).
