Grand Bay is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Mobile County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the community is 3,918.

Geography

Grand Bay is located at 30°28'27" North, 88°20'31" West (30.474055, -88.341836). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 22.5 km² (8.7 mi²). 22.4 km² (8.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,918 people, 1,364 households, and 1,078 families residing in the community. The population density is 174.7/km² (452.3/mi²). There are 1,441 housing units at an average density of 64.2/km² (166.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 89.00% White, 8.88% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,364 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.5% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 18.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.19. In the community the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males. The median income for a household in the community is $38,941, and the median income for a family is $43,654. Males have a median income of $33,177 versus $21,920 for females. The per capita income for the community is $15,741. 8.1% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
