. He is the son of jazz
bassist
Grachan Moncur II
. After playing with
Ray Charles
and with
Art Farmer
's and
Benny Golson
's Jazztet, he recorded two influential albums as leader:
Evolution '63
with
Jackie McLean
and
Lee Morgan
, and
Some Other Stuff
with
Herbie Hancock
and
Wayne Shorter
. He has remained a major figure in
free
