Graben

In geology, a graben is a depressed fault block bordered by normal faults. The Rhine valley below Basel, Switzerland is an example of a graben. "Graben" is the German word for "ditch". See also rift (geology), and Horst.

The Graben is one of the most important streets Vienna's first district, the center of the city. It takes its name from the wall of one of the moats of the Roman encampment of Vindobona which was located there in ancient times.
