Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge

Opened in December 1940, the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge is located on US 301 and extends 1.7 miles across the Potomac River. It connects points near Morgantown in Charles County, Maryland and Dahlgren in King George County, Virginia. President Franklin D. Roosevelt participated in the facility's ground breaking in 1939. In 1967, it was renamed for Harry W. Nice (1877-1941) who served as governor of Maryland from 1935 to 1939. The Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge is located almost entirely in Maryland, as the state line runs along the Virginia side of the Potomac River at this location. The two-lane bridge handled nearly 5.6-million vehicles during the 2003 fiscal year. It is a toll facility and is one of 7 operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority.
