Gothic Literature

  Gothic novel
Gothic literature is a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. It relies upon different conventions - it largely combines the real and the fabulous, it is usually sensational or supernatural. It's typical settings will include gloomy castles, oppressive ruins in wild landscapes, European countries usually under a Catholic or feudal reign,. There will be a heroine of trembling sensitivy with an impetuous lover and a tyrannical older man. The style of narrative will be discontinous and convoluted. Certain topics will recur, such as deathlike states. Incest and unnatural echoes will probably feature, as well as effects of guilt and/or shame. The hero will probably come upon unintelligible writings and several matters that may be "unspeakable".
