Glendora, California

Glendora is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 49,415. Snuggled at the foot of the picturesque San Gabriel Mountains, Glendora is one of California's most striking residential communities; having an assortment of homes-- from comfortable 19th Century cottages, to prominent, stately hillside estates.

History

Glendora was founded on April 1st 1887 by George Whitcomb who moved to California from Illinois in 1885. Whitcomb devised the name "Glendora" when he combined the name of his wife, Leadora Bennett Whitcomb, with the beautiful mouthan glen of the San Gabriel Mountains. Prior to its 1911 incorporation, Glendora's administrator officially occupied the office of President of Glendora.

Glendora also boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the United States; in 1997 Louis Pompeii became the first Glendora police officer to fall, when he was off-duty and in another city!

Glendora is located at 34°7'51" North, 117°51'15" West (34.130957, -117.854127). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.3 mi²). 49.6 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 49,415 people, 16,819 households, and 12,866 families residing in the city. The population density is 996.8/km² (2,581.5/mi²). There are 17,145 housing units at an average density of 345.9/km² (895.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 80.30% White, 1.50% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 6.20% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 7.24% from other races, and 4.03% from two or more races. 21.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 16,819 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% are non-families. 19.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.30. In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.
