Glen Carbon is a village located in Madison County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 10,425.

Geography

Glen Carbon is located at 38°45'35" North, 89°58'9" West (38.759801, -89.969204). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 19.3 km² (7.5 mi²). 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,425 people, 4,011 households, and 2,815 families residing in the village. The population density is 542.5/km² (1,405.5/mi²). There are 4,236 housing units at an average density of 220.4/km² (571.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 89.09% White, 6.96% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.12% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,011 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.06. In the village the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $55,841, and the median income for a family is $72,182. Males have a median income of $50,086 versus $31,689 for females. The per capita income for the village is $26,374. 5.8% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
