Glasair

A Glasair is a high performance, low wing, two person (side by side) fiberglass airplane built from a kit. The Glasair Company, based in Arlington, Washington, is the designer and supplier of these homebuilt kits, offering a very complete set of parts and plans to homebuilders all over the world. The Glasair TD of 1979 was the first pre-molded composite aircraft kit on the general aviation market. The company, started by Tom Hamilton, was named, tongue in cheek, to sound like the big aircraft manufacturers in the United States by using Mr. Hamilton's middle and last name. Hence, Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft. Retractable gear and up-engined models were later introduced, with the Glasair III Turbo capable of speeds in excess of 300 mph, and another model being fitted with a turboprop engine. In the mid-1990s, Glasair introduced the Glastar, a high-wing, short-field capable utility aircraft with two seats. In 2001, the assets of Stoddard-Hamilton were bought by a pair of Glasair owners and divided into New Glasair LLC and New Glastar LLC, bringing the company out of bankruptcy and allowing continued production of kits at the Arlington factory.
