Gheorghe Pop De BasestiGheorghe Pop de Băseşti (1 August 1835 – 23 February 1919) was a Romanian politician of Transylvania that was the vicepresident (1881-1902) and then the president (1902-1918) of the National Romanian Party in the time Transylvania was still under Hungarian rule. In 1872 he was elected deputy in the Hungarian parliament where, for nine years fought for the rights of the Romanians. He was one the leaders of the Memorandum movement of 1892-1894, which demanded equal rights for the Romanians of Transylvania and was among the people that were sentenced to prison for this demand. Pop de Băseşti was the president of the assembly of Alba-Iulia of December 1 1918, when the union of the Kingdom of Romania and Transylvania was declared.
