German Swiss International SchoolThe German Swiss International School (Deutsch-Schweizerische Internationale Schule) was established in 1969 as the first international school for German-speaking expartiates in Hong Kong. It had 73 students its opening year, but now has more than 1,100 students from over 30 different countries. Structure GSIS is comprised of four schools:- a kindergarten, a primary, a secondary school and a Berufsschule (vocational training centre). The primary and secondary schools are separated into two main 'streams', the German stream and the International stream, where the teaching medium is German and English respectively. The German stream students follow the German education system, e.g. instead of A-levels, they take the Abitur. The International stream students follow the UK system in general, including IGCSEs and A-levels, although students are gradually branching out by taking International Baccalaureates (IBs), Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SATs) and other international public exams. Classes from kindergarten are split up into several classes to prevent overcrowding, e.g. P5c would be the 'c' class of Primary 5, and F1d would be the 'd' class of Form 1. See Education System in Hong Kong for more. Officially, these are not split up by academic standard. Academia GSIS has traditionally been one of the strongest schools academically in Hong Kong. Its main weakness has been its inability to retain students past Form 3 or Form 4, due to these academically-strong students leaving to go abroad to top secondary schools in the UK or the US. This has affected its sixth-form intake slightly, but still represents the better half of local students. Nevertheless, GSIS has special intensive programmes to cater for students looking to enter Oxford or Cambridge and other top non-UK universities. Website German Swiss International School
