Germ Cell Tumour

Germ cell tumours are ovarian neoplasms derived from germ cells. They account for 30% of ovarian tumours, but only 1 to 3% of ovarian carcinomas in North America. However, in patients under the age of 21, 60% of ovarian tumours are of the germ cell type, and up to one-third are malignant. The general approach to histologic classification is the same as for the testis. In the ovary, most malignant germ cell tumours are pure, and only 10% are mixed. Members of the germ cell tumours include dysgerminoma, yolk sac tumours (aka Endodermal sinus tumour), and teratomas.
