. He bought the magazine
Scientific American
in
1947
and became its
chairman
in
1980
. In
1986
he became the president of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science
(AAAS). He was born in
Woodmere, New York
and died in
Mount Sinai Hospital
in
Queens, New York City
. Dr. Piel also wrote for various magazines, including
The Nation
.
