Georgian-armenian War 1918Georgian-Armenian War 1918 was a border war fought between the Democratic Republic of Georgia and Republic of Armenia over the part of a historical Georgian province of Djavakheti, which was largely populated by Armenians in the 19th century. By the end of World War I these territories were occupied by the Ottomans. When they abandoned the region, both Georgians and Armenians claimed control. Soon the former declared the disputed territories part of Georgia. Armenia refused to recognize this and denied to cooperate to seek a peaceful settlement. The fighting broke out after the Armenian forces under General Dro violated the Georgian borders on December 7, 1918. The Menshevik government of Georgia tried to negotiate with the Armenians and gave no effective resistance to the enemy allowing the latter to advance further. Only on December 19, Georgian troops and National Guards carried out a highly successful counter-attack and routed the Armenian army. On December 31, the cease-fire was negotiated with British intervention. The two countries re-established diplomatic ties. The mutual administration was established in the border district of Borchalo. The war inflicted great injury to the image of the Transcaucasian republics in the West and made the Great Powers hesitate to give the countries de jure recognition. On February 21, 1921, the 11th Red Army of Bolshevist Russia invaded Georgia from Armenia and provoked a pro-Bolshevik revolt in a part of the Armenian population in Georgia. After the Soviet occupation, Georgia was forced to cede a part of disputable region, particularly a district of Lore to Soviet Armenia.
