Georgia Gold Belt

The Southeast gold vein runs from Alabama to Virginia. Smaller gold deposits can be found farther north - but in smaller quantity. The most gold in the Eastern United States can be found in the Georgia Gold Belt. This extends from Alabama to Rabun County, GA. The most concentration of gold is found in White County, GA, Lumpkin County, GA, and northern Cherokee County, GA. The historic cities of Auraria, Georgia and Dahlonega, Georgia found the most success from gold - and the US even opened a mint there until 1861. The gold is close to pure 24 karat gold - due to the age of the mountain range. Most of the gold is found in eroded (saprolite) rock - and mixed in with quartz.
