Georgi Nikolayevich Babakin

Georgi Nikolayevich Babakin (November 14, 1914August 3, 1971) was a Soviet Engineer working in the space program. He was Chief Designer at the Lavochkin Design Bureau from 1965 until his death. Some people believe his sudden death in 1971, which coincided with the loss of the Soyuz 11 crew and the N1 rocket booster, had a strongly demoralizing effect on the Soviet space efforts. Craters on Mars and the Moon were named in his honor.
