Democratic
politician
who was the
Governor
of
Alabama
from
1874
to
1878
. He was elected to the
U.S. Senate
in
1866
but was not allowed to take his seat, as Alabama was still under
Reconstruction
. He was later reelected and served in the Senate from
March 4
,
1879
until his death at the end of that year.
