George Rennie (Sculptor And Politician)

George Rennie (1801 or 1802 - 1860) was a Scottish sculptor and politician. A nephew of John Rennie, he studied art in Rome. His marble statue Cupid Rekindling the Torch of Hymen is currently in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Later he turned his attention to politics. In 1841 he became Member of Parliament for Ipswich, England. In 1842 he proposed the "New Edinburgh" scheme for establishing a Scottish settlement in New Zealand; see second external link below for details. From 1848 to 1855 he served as Governor of the Falkland Islands. He was also responsible for making admission to St Paul's Cathedral, the National Gallery, London and the British Museum free of charge.
