Scottish
sculptor
and
politician
. A
nephew
of
John Rennie
, he studied
art
in
Rome
. His
marble
statue
Cupid
Rekindling the Torch of
Hymen
is
currently
in the
Victoria and Albert Museum
,
London
. Later he turned his attention to politics. In
1841
he became
Member of Parliament
for
Ipswich
,
England
. In
1842
he proposed the "New Edinburgh" scheme for establishing a Scottish settlement in
New Zealand

1855
he served as Governor of the
Falkland Islands
. He was also responsible for making admission to
St Paul's Cathedral
, the
National Gallery, London
and the
British Museum
free of charge.
