Geography Of London

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom.

Physical Features

Greater London covers an area of 609 square miles (1579 km2). It is built on west of the River Thames estuary, a key factor in the city's success since ships carrying cargo can travel up the River Thames. The primary drawback is that London is in the tidal range of the North Sea, which leaves it in constant risk of being flooded from high surge tides. This has led to construction of the Thames Barrier in 1984 at Woolwich. Another problem with South East England is the fact that it is slowly sinking at an average of 60cm a century and tides are rising on top of that.
