Generic Routing Encapsulation

Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) is a protocol designed for encapsulation of arbitrary kinds of network layer packets inside arbitrary kinds of network layer packets.

Example uses

  • Used in conjunction with PPTP to create VPNs.
