Gay AdoptionGay adoption refers to the adoption of children by a homosexual couple. Gay adoption is legal in Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands and will be available from September 2005 in the United Kingdom. Within the U.S., the states of Florida, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Colorado and Utah all prohibit same-sex couples from adopting children, yet some point out that in some circumstances, even former convicted felons and single parents are able to adopt. It is also viewed by many as a contradictory stance that in many of the states that have bans on gay adoption that gays are still able to foster parent. Numerous studies conducted by major scientific and medical institutions like the American Psychological Association (APA), American Psychiatric Association (APA), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other groups have found there to be little if any difference between the effects of parenting conducted by same-sex couples and that of heterosexual couples, and official statments of support have even been issued that support the rights of same-sex couples to adopt, parent, and marry. Still, in spite of this, there still appears to be a bit of resistance towards the rights of same-sex couples to adopt. One prominent figure in the gay adoption debate is actress and comedian Rosie O'Donnell, who is an adoptive parent in a same-sex relationship. She was the subject of an interview with journalist Diane Sawyer. O'Donnell is remembered for her efforts in challenging Florida's gay adoption ban.
