Gatun Dam

Gatun Dam is an earth dam created in the early 20th century as a main element in the construction of the Panama Canal. At the time the Canal opened in 1914, the dam was considered the largest of its kind in the world. The picture shows the dam during full discharge, which is usually during the rainy season (April through December), when the water level of the lake tends to rise above normal limits. The steel bridge that appears in front of the dam, over the Chagres River, has to be closed to the public during the scheduled discharges, due to the power and height the water gains after going down the spillway.
