Gateway, Alaska

Gateway is a census-designated place located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 2,952.

Geography

Gateway is located at 61°34'35" North, 149°15'9" West (61.576398, -149.252506). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 43.5 km² (16.8 mi²). 42.1 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,952 people, 981 households, and 781 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 70.1/km² (181.5/mi²). There are 1,084 housing units at an average density of 25.7/km² (66.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.25% White, 0.71% Black or African American, 4.00% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 5.01% from two or more races. 2.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 981 households out of which 49.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% are non-families. 15.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.36. In the CDP the population is spread out with 34.5% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.8 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $60,385, and the median income for a family is $65,990. Males have a median income of $51,250 versus $37,135 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $24,548. 7.2% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
