Gatesville is a town located in Gates County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 281. It is the county seat of Gates County.

Geography

Gatesville is located at 36°24'16" North, 76°45'30" West (36.404390, -76.758435). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 281 people, 117 households, and 80 families residing in the town. The population density is 258.3/km² (675.8/mi²). There are 142 housing units at an average density of 130.5/km² (341.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.54% White, 11.03% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 117 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.00. In the town the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,375, and the median income for a family is $62,500. Males have a median income of $40,625 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,190. 3.9% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
