Gate City is a town located in Scott County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,159. It is the county seat of Scott County.

Geography

Gate City is located at 36°38'18" North, 82°34'50" West (36.638325, -82.580659). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.3 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,159 people, 984 households, and 604 families residing in the town. The population density is 408.6/km² (1,058.8/mi²). There are 1,119 housing units at an average density of 211.8/km² (548.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.69% White, 3.80% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 984 households out of which 23.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 36.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.81. In the town the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,875, and the median income for a family is $48,068. Males have a median income of $35,875 versus $22,292 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,268. 13.5% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 22.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
