Gary O'neilGary O'Neil (born May 18, 1983 in London, England) is an English Association Football player who currently plays for Portsmouth F.C.. O'Neil is a young midfielder with huge potential. After rising through the ranks of the Portsmouth F.C. youth set-up he made the breakthrough into the first team in January 2000 aged just 16. Then manager Tony Pulis showed faith in O'Neil despite his young age, but a broken foot hampered his progression to first team regular. He was loaned to Walsall F.C. at the beginning of the 2003/04 season in order to gain first team experience. On his return he again broke into the first team, and captained the England Under-20 side at the World Youth Cup in Dubai in November/December. At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he was loaned to Cardiff City F.C. to gain further first team experience. After excelling in the Welsh capital, he was recalled to Portsmouth in November, going straight into the first team. From being virtually ignored by Harry Redknapp, for being not signed by himself, perhaps, he has become a regular since Redknapp's departure to an unhappy time at the red end of the Solent. His performances have earned him caps for England at every youth level, and he currently captains the Under-21 side, having held that position at each youth level.
