Gallery Pl-chinatown (Washington Metro)Gallery Pl-Chinatown is a Washington Metro station in Washington, DC on the Green, Red and Yellow Lines. It is a transfer station between the Red Line and the other two lines. Galley Pl-Chinatown is located in Northwest, with entrances at 7th and F and H Streets, and at 9th and G Street. It serves Chinatown, Washington, DC (see Chinatown for more information) and downtown Washington, with the MCI Center, National Portrait Gallery (for which the station is named) and the Washington Convention Center nearby, as well as the headquarters of the FBI. It was originally named "Gallery Place," with the "Chinatown" name added in the late 1980s. The station is located very close to Metro Center, such that the lights of one are visible down the tunnel from the other; as such, some have suggested a pedestrian tunnel to connect the two. Service began on December 15, 1976; it was originally supposed to open with the rest of the first stations on March 27, 1976 but a court order over lack of handicapped access delayed it until the WMATA could give assurance that such access would be available by June 1, 1977.
