Gabonese Democratic Party

The Gabonese Democratic Party (French: Parti Dmocratique Gabonais) is the ruling and dominant party of Gabon. It has held power since independence, first under Lon M'ba (with the party named the Gabonese Democratic Bloc), then under current leader Omar Bongo. In the Gabonese National Assembly it holds 86 of 120 seats, and in the Gabonese Senate it holds 54 of 91 seats. The PDG was the sole legal party from its inception in 1968 until 1991. It is seen mainly as a personal vehicle for the president and his Bateke ethnic group rather than an ideological movement. See also: Politics of Gabon, List of political parties in Gabon.
